Ohio is a treasure trove of prime fishing locations, but these special four are some of our favorites at Norton Sporting Goods! Beautiful trees and flowers are blooming all around and the weather is warming up to the ideal temperatures for fishing. Come out of your winter hibernation and savor the sweet smells of springtime. Whether you're fishing from a pier or on a boat headed out on the lake, you're sure to find a great new fishing location in the Waldo area. Don't forget to grab your Ohio fishing license before you hit the water!
Mt. Gilead State Park
Located in Morrow County, Mt. Gilead State Park was originally one of the stops on the underground railroad in Civil War times. Today, this lovely lake is home to a wealth of natural wonders. Dense beech-maple forests and multiple streams provide an abundance of interesting outdoor details for the intrepid explorer. Check the website for a construction update: the lake is being restocked and refilled now and should be open for business very soon.
Delaware State Park
Named for the people of the Delaware tribe and located in the plains of Delaware County, Delaware State Park features meadows, woodlands and plenty of animal life. You'll especially appreciate the large number of wildflowers you'll find scattered throughout the park. Fishing in this area is exceptional and includes crappie, muskie, small- and largemouth bass.
Findlay Reservoir
This upground reservoir is part of the Northwest Ohio Water Development Plan, and has a surface area of 645 acres — making it one of the largest in Ohio. Many miles of diked shoreline make this prime real estate for anglers. You'll find a variety of fish, including:
- Walleye
- Bluegill
- Crappie
- White bass
- Large and smallmouth bass
- Yellow perch
- Channel catfish and more
While ice fishing is allowed, spring is considered the best time to find nearly all species of fish.
Outhwaite Reservoir
Outhwaite is a smaller upground reservoir, with a surface area of approximately 148 acres and a modest depth of between 23 to 43 feet. You'll find many of the same fish as in the Findlay Reservoir, with the addition of saugeye. Experts recommend grabbing a boat to fully explore all fishing spots, especially if you're on the hunt for bullheads, channel cats or saugeye. You'll catch some bluegill in the inlet and outlet structures, though.
Spring is the best time to get out and enjoy the sunshine and warm breezes off of the water. Don't get caught without the fishing gear that you need to have fun.
