Fishing season is upon us, and that means that it's time to load up your tackle box and hit the water. Here in Delaware, we are lucky to have a wide range of fishing spots to choose from. From lakes and rivers to wetlands and wildlife preserves, you'll have your pick of spots to find your preferred type of fish. Here's a look at the top three spots in the state for fishing and any important regulations you need to know about.
Delaware State Park
The Delaware State Park features a 1,300-acre reservoir that is well-stocked with fish. The lake is arguably one of the best havens for Crappie in the state, but is also great for Largemouth Bass, Catfish, and Bluegills. In addition to being able to go fishing, you'll also be able to camp right inside the park, so you won't have far to go in the morning to get right back to fishing again. You'll need to have a fishing permit to fish in the park, so be sure to obtain one before you arrive. You can purchase one at the park, but that will take away from your precious fishing time, so have your permit ready to go in advance so you can get straight to fishing.
Alum Creek State Park
Alum Creek State Park has a long-standing history that dates back thousands of years. With fertile agriculture and river valleys being surrounded by farmland it's no wonder that Alum Creek has proven to be such a large attraction. With 3,387-acres of reservoir and 4,630-acres of fields and woodland, there is plenty of opportunity for recreational activities. Alum Creek's scenic and quiet cove offers the perfect fishing spot for families or those that want to fish in peace. The lake is known for some great fishing and is home to many species including, Crappie, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Muskies, and Saugeye.
Big Island Wildlife Area
The Big Island Wildlife Area spans more than 5,800 acres. More than 20 percent of that space is made up of ponds, lakes, rivers, marshes and wetlands, giving you plenty of opportunities to fish. Big Island is off the beaten track and rarely crowded. With so many fishing spots to choose from, you'll need plenty of time to try out them all, so plan out a camping trip in the area with your friends or family to really take advantage of everything this spectacular wildlife area has to offer.
