How to Prepare for Spring Youth Turkey Season
We're heading into spring here in Ohio, and that means that spring turkey season is right around the corner. This year, youth turkey season will fall on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22. This is immediately before the regular turkey hunting season and gives a chance for the littlest hunters to get in on the action. Hunting hours are from 30 minutes before sunrise until sunset. Here's what you need to know to have a great time hunting with your kids while also keeping everyone as safe as possible.
Comply with All Regulations
Hunting practices are strictly regulated in Ohio, so you want to make sure that you and your kids are following the rules. You'll each need to have a valid hunting license and a wild turkey permit to be allowed to participate in youth turkey season. During the hunting period, each youth hunter can bag no more than two wild turkeys, one per day. If you plan to take your kids out hunting during the regular turkey season as well, keep in mind that this two-turkey limit applies for the entire season. If your child bags two birds during youth season, that's it for the rest of the year.
Teach Proper Gun Safety
Here at Norton Sporting Goods, gun safety is our top priority, especially when it comes to youth hunters. Take the time to educate your kids about gun safety before you head out to hunt. Once you're out there, they'll likely be too excited to pay attention, so pick a time when they are calm and focused. Make sure that your children know how to load, unload and clean their firearms, and stress the importance of never pointing a gun at another person, even if it isn't loaded.
While out on the hunt, wear reflective or brightly colored clothing so that other hunters can clearly see you, and remind your kids frequently of the safety tips you have taught them. If you notice that they seem to be getting a bit over-excited, take a break to cool down. When kids get rambunctious, all those safety precautions can slip their minds, so take care to keep them focused on the task at hand.
