Late-Season Deer Hunting Tactics
We're nearing the end of deer season, but that doesn't mean you can't still snag yourself a healthy buck. You will, however, need to change up your tactics a bit to have the greatest chances of success. Here's what you need to know to make the best of a part of deer hunting season that many hunters overlook.
Find Bucks Where They Are
At this point in deer season, most of the animals have already mated and have now shifted into feeding mode. However, the bucks do still tend to hang out in areas where you find the most does. Feeding activity typically takes place during the middle of the day, so you'll likely have the best luck in the hours closest to noon. This is especially true during cold fronts, so try to time your hunting excursions along with the weather.
When it comes to finding food sources that are likely to attract deer, focus your efforts on those that provide plenty of carbs. Deer are especially fond of corn, soybeans and alfalfa. They are also known to eat acorns from oak trees. Particularly after the early snows of the season, deer will be looking to fill up their bellies for the winter, so you'll have a good chance to bag one in the process.
Plan Your Approach
After feeding, the deer will seek out a place to bed down, giving you the chance to sneak up and capture your prey. Stealth is of the utmost importance here, as the deer will be on especially high alert to human presence late in the season. Keep a safe distance as you track your target so that you don't spook the deer. If you get too close, you run the risk of scaring him off for the rest of the season.
The best approach is to discern in which direction the buck is heading so that you can get out in front. This way, you can target the deer as it is moving towards you, giving you plenty of time to set up a blind or another form of shelter while you wait. Patience is the name of the game. Although you may feel a bit rushed as the season nears its close, you need to keep your head about you to have the best chance of achieving your goal.
